Travel updates

Bateman's

PLEASE NOTE: The bus service to Bateman’s was changed on April 29, 2015, and the authors have not personally verified the new bus route (Bus 31). Readers should check the TheSussexBus.com website for current information.

Based on current information, there are two options:
(1) From London Charing Cross Rail Station, take the Southeastern train towards Hastings Rail Station and get off at Etchingham Rail Station (about an half and 15 minutes). It is about a four minute walk to the bus stop which is opposite the rail station. Take Bus 31 toward Heathfield and Burwash. Bateman’s is near Burwash, and you should tell the driver you want to exit at Bateman’s because it is not a clearly marked stop. It is a very pretty half mile walk to the house.

(2) From London Bridge Rail Station, take Southern train toward Uckfield (about an half and 15 minutes). From the Uckfield Rail Station, it's two or three minutes to the bus station. Come down the lane and go right until there's a street crossing. On the other side of the street, continue in same direction, and go left at first corner (just past Boot's chemists). The bus station is just feet away. From the bus station, take Bus 31 toward Burwash and exit at Bateman's. (You should tell driver you want to exit at Bateman’s because the stop isn’t clearly marked.) It is a very pretty half mile walk to the house.

Agatha Christie's Greenway

A direct route from London Paddington to Paignton has been added, and there have been changes in the Dartmouth Steam Railway schedule and in the vintage bus schedule to Greenway:

It would be possible to travel from London to Greenway and back in the same day, but it would be a long day. You could take the 7:30 am First Great Western train from London Paddington toward Paignton (which is on the South Devon coast near Torquay) arriving at 11 a.m. The Paignton Rail Station is adjacent to the Dartmouth Steam Railway Station which has a 10:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. train (20 minutes) to Greenway Halt. From there it is a very pleasant 30-minute walk to the Greenway house. The return trip would get you back to Paignton in time for the 4:50 or 5:45 p.m. train and a 3 1/2 hour trip back to London (via Newton Abbot). The steam train round trip fare is £8.5.

Another alternative from Paignton to Greenway would be to catch a vintage bus from Paignton directly to Greenway House (Tuesday through Saturday, March 7 to October 31). The bus departs Paignton at 10:15 am (March and October) and at 11 am (April through September) from the bus stop on the seaward side of the road on Paignton Seafront opposite the new play park. This would be about a 20-minute walk from the rail station. The fare is Adult £12 and Child £8.

Hatfield House

The train to Hatfield House has had a name change. You now catch the Great Northern train to Hatfield Station.

St. Michael's Mount

To get from Penzance to Marazion (and St. Michael's Mount) you take Bus 2, 17 or 300.
